Active Directory Tools by Dovestones Software

Active directory

Active Directory Tools by Dovestones Software

This guide gives a brief overview of the Active Directory tools and software products available for managing Active Directory. Dovestones Software provides some of the most popular Active Directory (AD) tools used by a wide range of orgranizations. These tools include AD Bulk Users, AD Bulk Contacts, AD Bulk Export, AD Find and Replace, True Last Logon, AD Photos, Home Folder Creator, AD Phonebook, AD Self Update and more. How to export Data from Active Directory

Let’s start with the basics, exporting from Active Directory. AD Bulk Export is an astonishingly simple tool to use, yet it’s powerful and can be fully automated. It allows you to export as much information as you require from Active Directory, this can be for Users, Contacts, Groups and Computer objects. With this tool, all attributes can be exported and you don’t need to make any changes to Active Directory to use it. How to import Data into Active Directory

AD Bulk Users makes importing and modifying large numbers of Active Directory Users easy. It can import simple or very detailed account information such as Passwords, Group Membership, Expiry Date, Profile locations. It can also create your Exchange Mailboxes and is compatible with Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010. You can import from a CSV file or SQL table.

Using Find And Replace with Active Directory

AD Find and Replace is designed to perform the familiar find and replace operation that you see in Word and Excel etc against Active Directory.

Find and Replace text within Active Directory
Quick and easy to use
A great time saver for busy administrators
Large list of supported attributes
Use Wildcards
Preview before making any changes

Spring clean Active Directory, removing unused and obsolete user computer accounts

Locating old and redundant Active Directory accounts can be a chore. As you may know Active Directory records the last time a user or computer logs on, this time is stored in the lastLogon attribute but this attributes isn’t replicated so each domain controller in the domain will more than likely have a different logon time for each user/computer. By using True Last Logon you can quickly and easily query each DC and find the True Last Logon time making it easy to identify those unused accounts. True Last Logon displays the true last logon time along with detailed account information, enabling you to apply filters and perform bulk actions on the results.

Why AD photos?

AD photos allows you to import a single photo or multiple photos into Active directory into the thumbnailPhoto attribute or the jpegPhoto attribute for use with outlook, exchange, SharePoint and AD Phonebook.

Active directory

Active Directory tools

Active Directory is a very important component of IT infrastructure based on Windows platform. Users perform various activities in AD catalog daily, so organizations need to allocate considerable resources to track all the changes in a timely manner. That is why Active Directory management and administration is an issue for IT specialists. We are starting a series of articles aiming to explain the basics of AD management and administration within large companies.

Even perfectly designed, planned, and implemented Active Directory infrastructure will not function properly without everyday monitoring and maintenance. In large companies Active Directory would be subject to thousands of changes every day (creation/deletion of user accounts, group membership, delegation rights, etc). To guarantee that all these changes in the network and IT workspace will not affect Active Directory functioning, it is necessary to daily monitor it with the help of Active Directory management tools.

Among a variety of AD tools there are some that offer a set of features that help to reduce the complexity of company management, IT workload, administrative costs, and improve security. In this article we will review Softerra Adaxes – an efficient and flexible Active Directory management solution that facilitates, automates and secures Active Directory management, maintenance and administration. Softerra Adaxes guarantees high-performance user lifecycle management achieved with:

Organization and effective distribution of permissions among Active Directory users; Windows-based & web-based Active Directory management; Quick and advanced search over the AD objects; An extensive list of Active Directory reports that facilitate analysis and monitoring of the Active Directory environment; Automation of routine administrative tasks (automatic change of the group membership of an object, modification of object properties, management of user home directories, movement of objects to new locations, deletion of objects, etc.); Avoidance of repetitive information input and observation of multiple enterprise standards when creating and modifying Active Directory objects; Definition of critical operations that are executed only after the execution is permitted by a responsible person; Capture of Active Directory objects spread over the Active Directory to organize them in an alternative way to collectively manage, overcoming the restrictions of domain or organizational structures; The possibility to track who performed what operations, when, on what objects, filter data to view all operations performed from a specific host within a specific period of time, etc.

As we can see, large companies need tools that allow to effective facilitate, automate and secure Active Directory management, maintenance and administration, hence reduce their work load.

Would you like to monitor Active Directory environment, update large-volume user information, automate routine tasks, search information in Active Directory, distribute permissions and perform a lot of other activities in AD with just one solution? Then Softerra Adaxes is just perfect for you.

5 Free Tools That Every Networtk Administrator Should Have

Every network administrator has their own set of tools that they like to use on a daily basis to
help them do their job. Here is my list and why each one of these free programs are in my
toolbox.

PuTTY – PuTTY is a very versatile telnet application for use when you spend a lot of your day
working on Cisco equipment. PuTTY allows a number of different ways to connect to a piece of equipment including Raw, Telnet, Rlogin, SSH, and with the newest version of PuTTY Serial connection. The newest Serial option becomes very handy for network administrators since
HyperTerm is no longer available with Windows Vista and you still need a serial connection for new routers and switches. PuTTY is also very customizable and can be run from a USB drive without installing anything onto the computer.

Sniffer – There are actually to sniffer applications that I keep in my toolbox, WireShark and
Smsniff. Both programs are free to download and use but the difference is that Wireshark has more functionality when it comes to filters. But smsniff can be launched from a USB drive without any installation onto the workstation. I use Wireshark more for general network slow downs where I have to monitor the entire network or an entire VLAN to pinpoint the problem. Where Smsniff I can use on a single machine when I know that machine is having a problem but I don’t know why. I simple run Smsniff on the problem machine and then watch the network traffic that comes across it. If it is a network problem I will see it reflected in the trace from Smsniff and I didn’t have to waste time configuring port mirroring or setting up a laptop to get the trace.

PumpKIN – PumpKIN is a free FTP server program that you can download and use to host your computer as an FTP server. I use this program main for transferring Cisco images back and forth from the switch or router to my computer. This program become very valuable when you have a switch or router down that you need to get back up quick.

NetScan – Netscan is a very useful tool that will attempt to ping every address within subnet or vlan and tell you which ones respond. NetScan will also try to resolve the IP address to a DNS name for you. I use this tool a lot when I want to quickly see who it connected to a VLAN and I want to know if anyone shouldn’t be connected, or who is connected via DHCP.

NetStumbler – NetStumbler was one of the first “Wardriving” programs you could get to pick up other people’s wireless networks. I use this tool on a regular basis for the opposite reason, I want to be able to check for rouge access points on my network. I simply use this little tool and walk around all of my offices and see what wireless devices pop up. I have found a couple of employees who wanted to work out side or away from their office and added a wireless AP so they could.

So those are 5 tools I believe every network administrator should have in their toolkit. For their ease of use, small size, and versatility they made my top 5 tools. Check out my other articles including 5 Tools Every PC Tech Should Have.
