How to reset Windows Server 2008 password

Posted by Alin D on March 10, 2011

How to reset Windows Server 2008 password

Windows Server 2008 is one of Microsoft Windows’ server line of operating systems. Besides Windows 7.Windows Server 2008 are the latest and more secured versions from Microsoft. Windows Server 2008 has many new features included that system administrators of small and large companies will enjoy.

Many use Windows 2008 server as a workstation. That means A group of computers and devices on a network that are administered as a unit with common rules and procedures. And the host computer manage these computers through its admin account and password.

If you have lost windows server2008 local admin password, I think it is easy for you to recover the password. But what if you have lost windows domain password? Things will get more tricky and all of the computers in the domain paralyze. These passwords also called AD password. Before solving your password problem, you need to know what is Active Directory Domain Controller.

What is Active Directory Domain Controller?

A domain controller is a server that is running a version of the Windows Server operating system and has Active Directory Domain Services installed.

When you install Windows Server on a computer, you can choose to configure a specific server role for that computer. When you want to create a new forest, a new domain, or an additional domain controller in an existing domain, you configure the server with the role of domain controller by installing Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DS).

There is the diffence bettwen Domain and local. A Windows Server domain is a logical group of computers running versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system that share a central directory database. A user may be granted access to a number of computer resources with the use of a single username and password combination.

A Domain Controller allows password authentication throughout a network. What this means is that your password is checked on the central server no matter which machine you log in from. A Domain Controller can also control access to files and directories which can be setup so users have access to all their files no matter which machine they log in from. This also makes adding and removing users among other things much easier as all that is required is a change on the Domain Controller itself rather than every machine on a network.

If you have lost this domain administrator password (also called AD password), it will be a tricky thing. However, Windows Password Key Enterprise can allow you to reset domain administrator password.

Here is the steps to reset Windows server domain password

Step 1: Download and install Windows Password Key Enterprise in any available computer.

Step 2: Run the software and insert a blank CD or USB Flash Drive to computer.

Step 3: Select Domain Administrator and choose CD/DVD or USB Flash Drive

Step 4: Click Burn to begin bootable disk creation.

Step 5: Insert the newly created CD/USB Flash Drive to your locked computer , but remember you need to set the bios setup , make sure the computer to boot from CD or USB.

Step 6: And then you can recover your Domain admin password

Now you can log on your domain admin account and reset a new password.

Note: This can also work in Windows Server 2000,2003

Creating a Windows Vista password reset disk can really come in handy if you forget your account password. With it, you can easily reset your password and get right in to Windows Vista.

While there are ways to recover lost passwords without a password reset disk, they are often complicated and time consuming.

Follow the easy steps below to create a password reset disk for your Windows Vista account:

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Click on the User Accounts and Family Safety link.

Click on the User Accounts link.

In the task pane on the left, click the Create a password reset disk link.

When the Forgotten Password Wizard window appears, click Next

Note: You will need some kind of portable media before being able to create a password reset disk. This means that you will need a flash drive or a floppy disk drive and blank floppy disk.

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010: Using MDT to Prepare, Install and Capture customized Windows 7 Images – Part I

Posted by Alin D on September 9, 2010

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit team released the first beta of their next version: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 (you can access to the Beta program from Microsoft Connect and download the build). This new version includes several improvements, but perhaps the most important ones are related to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 compatibility.

Some of the New Features

  • Support for deploying: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Hard Link Migrations using USMT 4 (User Migration Toolkit).
  • Integration with new Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) 2.0 toolset such as BCDBOOT and Windows PE 3.0.
  • DISM tool (Dism.exe) included with WAIK 2.0 replace three other tools on previous version: Pkgmgr.exe (Package Manager), Intlcfg.exe (Internal Settings Configuration Tool) and PEimg.exe (WindowsPE Command Line tool ).

If you are planning to implement Windows 7 on your environment or you want to start to get to know Microsoft Deployment Toolkit in this new version; I’ve prepared this step-by-step guides that will cover almost everything you need to know about MDT 2010 and automated Windows 7 deployment, with personalized images.

These posts will cover the Lite Touch Installation (LTI) type of deployment of Windows 7 (Zero Touch Installation with System Center Configuration Manager 2007 it’s not currently supported with these Beta versions).

What we are going to achieve? Add Windows 7 to MDT, include applications (Office 2007) to be deployed within the operating system to generate a reference image. And finally we’ll capture this reference image (in a single .wim file) and make it available for a massive deployment with MDT 2010.

Requirements

Note: LTI deployment does not require Windows Deployment Services (WDS) to be fully operational to actually work, but we are going to take this as a requirement to implement WDS for PXE boot for only WindowsPE images.

Environment

  • Active Directory and DNS
  • DHCP properly configured for WDS.
  • Windows Deployment Services (WDS) configured.
  • Windows 7 source files.

Note: WDS must be configured to work together with DHCP.

Server

  • Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta
  • Windows Automated Installation 2.0 (WAIK).
You can download WAIK 2.0 from this link (English).

Installation

You won’t have any problem installing MDT 2010 . There’s only a simple wizard to complete.

To verify that the installation completed successfully and all the necessary components are installed: Open “Deployment Workbench” snap-in from Start Menu, and check “Information Center” > “Components” > “Installed”.

MDT 2010 First Configurations

These initial configurations don’t differ from MDT 2008:

  1. Create the distribution share.
  2. Add operating system files to the distribution share.
  3. Create a task sequence for the reference computer.
  4. Create a deployment point.

Create the Distribution Share

This is the folder where the MDT files (OS, applications, drivers, etc) will be kept.

1. Open “Deployment Workbench”. Right click on “Distribution Share”  > “Create a Distribution Share Directory”.

2. Select a folder. Click on “Finish”.  Recommendation: Use a separate partition like “E:Distribution”.

Add Windows 7 Operating System

Here we are going to add the OS to be deployed and create the reference image.

1. On “Deployment Workbench” > “Distribution Share”, right-click on “Operating Systems” > “New”.

2. Choose the type of OS to add. Select “Full set of source files” and click on “Next”.

3. Select the Source Directory. In my case, I have the Windows 7 x64 files copied in the hard drive, so I also mark the option “Move the files to the distribution share instead of copying them”. Click on “Next”.

4. Select a directory name. And click on “Finish”.

Now all the files will be moved to the Distribution Share folder and should appear as available after it completes.

Create the Task Sequence

This is where we define the steps involved in the installation process for the target computer.

1. “Deployment Workbench” > “Distribution Share” > “Tasks Sequences” > “New”.

2. Enter a “Task Sequence ID”: “Win7”; and a “Task Sequence Name”: “Deploy Windows 7”.

3. Select “Standard Client Task Sequence”.

4. Select the version of the OS to be deployed, in this case “Windows 7 ULTIMATE”.

5. Enter the OS settings. “Full Name”, “Organization” and “Internet Explorer Home Page”.

6. Specify Administrator’s password. And click on “Finish”.

Create a Deployment Point

Here we’ll define the rules and parameters involved in the deployment.

1. “Deployment Workbench” > “Deploy” > “Deployment Points” > “New”.

2. Since we are going to use the distribution share on this computer, select “Lab or single-server deployment”.

3. Select a deployment point name “LAB”.

4. Leave deselected the options for this upgrade scenarios.

5. Select “Ask if an image should be captured”.

6. Leave deselected the option “Ask user to set the local Administrator Password” (already included on the task sequence).

7. Leave deselected the option “Ask user for a product key”.

8. On the next step, the Distribution (“Distribution$”) folder should be selected as the Share. Click on “Next”.

9. Select “Automatically determine the location on the network”. And click on “Finish”.

Now the deployment point is created, we now have to generate the boot media from the deployment point; this media will be used to create the reference computer.

10. “Deployment Workbench” > “Deploy” > “Deployment Points” > “LAB” > “Properties”.

11. Check on the “General Tab” the “x64” option for “Platforms Supported”. Also you can verify on “WindowsPE” tab other options like drivers or background image.

12. Now to generate the boot files:“Deployment Workbench” > “Deploy” > “Deployment Points” > “LAB” > “Update”.

This last step could take several minutes to complete, so be patient. It takes a while generate from scratch the ISO and WIM files used to boot environments. After it completes, you can find LiteTouchPE files inside “%distribution%Boot

Notice that I haven’t used the option “Out-of-Box Drivers”. Windows 7 contains almost every hardware driver available on the market, you won’t get much problem with this. But MDT has a simple and effective way to handle device drivers, using “Groups” where you can add specific files depending on your need. For example: You could have a group of drivers with all the files for specific model of notebooks devices, other for desktop.

We’ll be reviewing how to handle applications, most specific Office 2007, within an MDT deployment on the next posts.

How to Change SA Password or Other MS SQL Server Passwords?

Posted by Alin D on August 4, 2010

How to Change SA Password or Other MS SQL Server Passwords?

A few days ago, I had a painful exprience that I lost sa password on my MS SQL Server database, and I almost took the whole weekend to look for some efficient SA password recovery solutions. I asked friends, searched on Internet and even bought some books… Fortunately, I finally got MS SQL Server Password Unlocker and it instantly changed the SA password but no data loss. Besides, I also got a couple of good “recover SA password” solutions in order to save your weekend in case you have lost or forgot MS SQL Server passwords (SA password!)

Option 1 : Use MS SQL Server Password Unlocker to Change SA Password

The most direct, efficient and fastest way to reset SA password is to take use of the third part utility – MS SQL Server Password Unlocker. Just two steps:

Step 1: Access to master.mdf file, which is default at C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDatamaster.mdf

Step 2: Select SA password and reset SA password

So, Change SA password success!

Option 2 : Change SA Password with Other SQL Server Login

If there is any other SQL Server Login that is a member of sysadmin role, you can log in using that account and reset SA password of SQL Server. Change the SA password account as described here :

SQL SERVER – Change Password of SA Login Using Management Studio.

Login into SQL Server using Windows Authentication.

In Object Explorer, open Security folder, open Logins folder. Right Click on SA account and go to Properties.

Change SA password, and confirm it. Click OK

Make sure to restart the SQL Server and all its services and test new password by log into system using SA login and new password.

Option 3 : Reset SA Password with Windows Login that is a member of Windows Admin Group

If there is any other Windows Login that is a member of Windows Admin Group, log in using that account. Start SQL Server in Single User Mode as described followings :

SQL SERVER – Start SQL Server Instance in Single User Mode.

There are certain situation when user wants to start SQL Server Engine in “single user” mode from the start up.

To start SQL Server in single user mode is very simple procedure as displayed below.

Go to SQL Server Configuration Manager and click on  SQL Server 2005 Services. Click on desired SQL Server instance and right click go to properties. On the Advance table enter param ‘-m;‘ before existing params in Startup Parameters box.

Make sure that you entered semi-comma after -m. Once that is completed, restart SQL Server services to take this in effect. Once this is done, now you will be only able to connect SQL Server using sqlcmd.

Make sure to remove newly added params after required work is completed to restart it in multi user mode.

Create a new login and give it sysadmin permission.

Note : If you have SQL Server Agent enabled, it starts before SQL Server service. If you have enabled SQL Server in a single user mode, it will connect it first, so it is recommended to turn that off before attempting any of the above options.

Forgot Windows Administrator Password? Ways to Recover and Reset Password on any Windows system

Posted by Alin D on July 24, 2010

Forgot Windows Administrator Password? Ways to Recover and Reset Password on any Windows system

What should you do when you forgot the password to login to Windows system? Ask an a dministrator to reset the log on password for you. If you yourself are administrator, and you can’t remember the administrator password, the problem get a little tricky, and probably hard to recover the ‘forgotten password’ again. Before you search for recovery CD or Windows DVD to format and reinstall Windows onto the computer, here a few ways you can try to unlock the Windows to gain access to the system again, at least by resetting the password.

Method 1: Take a rest, and try hard to remember the forgotten password

Sometimes, human being is a little weird. You won’t get the thing that you urgently need. So have a coffee, take a snap or even come back after a few days, you may found that you suddenly ‘remember’ your Windows password.

Method 2: Try No Password Administrator Login Backdoor

In Windows XP (not Windows Vista as Administrator account is not enabled by default), there is built-in Administrator user account, that has administrative credentials, enabled by default, and without any password to protect the account from been access. If you didn’t change this Administrator’s password, then try to sign in to Windows XP without password.

Method 3: Reset password from another user account with administrator credentials

If you cannot log on to Windows by using a particular user account, but you can log on to another account that has administrative credentials, follow these steps on how to do the trick:

Log on to Windows by using an administrator account that has a password that you remember. You may need to start WinXP in safe mode.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type “control userpasswords″, and then click OK.
Click the user account that you forgot the password for, and then click Reset Password.
Type a new password in both the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and then click OK.

Method 4: Do-It-Yourself (DIY) third party recovery tool

There are a lot of tools and utilities that can be downloaded and used to recover, reset, retrieve or reveal existing password. These password reset or retrieval utilities, free or paid, are usually a Linux boot disk or CD that able to comes with NT file system (NTFS) drivers and software that will read the registry and rewrite the password hashes, or can brute force crack the password for any user account including the Administrators. The advantage is that there is no fear of leaking your password to outsiders, while the process requires physical access to the console and a floppy or CD drive, depending on which tool you choose. And it’s not easy, although it always work!

Method 5: Third party password recovery toolkits

Windows Password Recovery 6.0–Windows Password Recovery 6.0 is an easy-to-use tool designed for resetting local administrator and user passwords on any Windows system. If you have forgotten your password, or are locked out, or you do not have access to the password of the system. It is the most effective product on the market. with a Graphical background and it is the easiest solution for Home Users and the overall Best for Businesses. You only need to boot from Windows Password Recovery 6.0 CD/DVD, and reset forgotten password to Blank . Then you can get back into your system with blank password. No need to call a technician, no need to re-install anything, and you certainly don’t need to reformat.

Warning: If you change or reset password by using any method above, all EFS encrypted files in Windows Vista or Windows XP will be unreadable and no longer recoverable unless you remember the old password that used to encrypt the files. So if you have any encrypted files, it’s best that you try to crack the password first in order to retrieve and get back the existing password first, before you attempt to reset the password to a new one.

See so many people confused by forgetting password including Windows, office, excel, word, pdf, rar, zip.etc,I would like to introduce some 3rd party utilitied which are claim to recover/reset/remove/unlock/crack/ the forgotten password to you. welcome to my blog : http://www.blog.recoverlostpassword.com

How To Find Windows 7 Administrator Password

Posted by Alin D on July 21, 2010

Administration windows 7

How To Find Windows 7 Administrator Password

Windows 7 administrator password is the password to any account that’s setup to access administrator level functions in Windows 7.

There doesn’t actually have to be an “Administrator” user account. What you need is the password to any account that can act as an administrator.

You will need to take a few times to get this password. You may need an administrator login password in Windows 7 if you’re trying to run certain types of programs or access certain Windows 7 recovery tools.

Follow the steps below to efficiently find the administrator login password in Windows 7!

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: Finding the password to an admin user may take minutes up to hours depending on the situation

Here’s step by step guide:

Try leaving the password blank. If there is actually an Administrator account, the password may not exist at all!

Just press Enter without typing anything when the logon asked for it.

Enter the password to your account. Often times, depending on how Windows 7 was setup on your computer, the primary user account will also be an administrator user account.

Try to remember administrator login password. As I mentioned in the last step, your account might be an administrator account, especially if you installed Windows 7 on your computer yourself.

If that’s true, but you’ve forgotten your password, you might be able to make really good guesses at what the administrator password might be.

Have another user enter his or her credentials. If there are other users that have accounts on your Windows 7 computer, one of them may be setup with administrator access.

If this is true, have the other user designate you as an administrator as well.

Recover the administrator password using a Windows password recovery tool. You may be able to recover or reset an administrator password with one of these free tools.

Note: Some password recovery tools on the list I have in connection with the above change and the ability to set user accounts in Windows 7 Administrator account. This can be useful if you know the password, but it is not an administrator account.

Perform a clean install of Windows 7. This is a last resort option. This type of installation will completely remove Windows 7 from your PC and install it again from scratch.

If you’re just curious about the administrator password, I would not recommend this resort. However, if you need an administrator password to access the operating system of diagnosis and this is your last effort to save the computer running a clean install will work.

Keep in mind that it is a time consuming process due to the fact that all of your data must be backed up and then later restored.

Tips:

Looking for your administrator login password but you don’t have Windows 7? See How to Find Windows Administrator Passwords for instructions tailored for other Windows operating systems.
